Start your first interview in 3 steps

CalmRound listens to the interview and shows a suggested answer built from the resume and notes you add. For your first run, do these 3 steps and leave everything else on the defaults.

  1. Add your materials

Upload your resume and the job description under Resume & materials. How to prepare →

  2. Pick a mode, start

Video interview for a call on this computer, Speaker mode for a phone on speaker. After you start, the overlay opens by itself (not in Speaker mode); Ctrl+Shift+Space hides it and brings it back.

  3. Press F1 when they finish

    Say the suggested answer.

Prepare your materials

An answer can only use facts that are in your materials; anything missing, the AI has to guess. Prepare them in this order.

  1. Add your resume and the job description under Resume & materials → Background materials. Files must be PDF, DOCX, TXT or MD:

    • .doc: open it in Word or WPS and save it as DOCX.
    • Slides: export them to PDF.
    • Images: click Upload image under Let AI organize your notes to read the text.
    • Scanned PDF: run text recognition (OCR) on it first.
    • Too large: split it into several files.
    • Import doesn't work while an interview is running.
  2. Click Start organizing to turn your resume, project notes and past questions into Q&A. Check each entry and delete anything that didn't happen, then click Add to knowledge base.

  3. Put what you want to say your own way, like your intro or why you're leaving, into Prepared answers. Only entries you wrote, or edited after organizing, count. To have them used word for word, see Answer settings.

  4. Open Guide and click Test how answers come out. Read one real question aloud and check the answer sounds like you.

Four kinds of facts to include

Experience

Company, role, dates and the part you owned. "Participated" isn't enough; say what you did.

Project details

What the project did, what you changed and the result. Use numbers where you have them; otherwise describe the before and after.

Job-search facts

Why you're leaving, salary expectation, notice period, and the locations or travel you can accept.

Credentials

Degrees, majors, certificates and language levels. For anything with a validity period, include the dates.

Don't repeat what's already on your resume. Anything missing goes into background notes or the relevant Q&A. If two places disagree, the AI picks one.

Same question, before and after materials"Tell me about the hardest project you've worked on."
No materials

The hardest backend problems I run into usually come down to keeping data consistent across multiple services when things fail in the middle. My approach is to avoid distributed transactions entirely…

With materials

The hardest one was migrating our orders table from a single MySQL instance to a sharded setup. That table had grown to about 600 million rows. I owned the migration plan and the execution… Order query p99 dropped from 480 milliseconds to 70 milliseconds. Schema changes went from a three-hour window to under ten minutes.

The demo uses a fictional person's materials. Both are real CalmRound answers, shortened.

Several roles: material sets

Make one set per role at the top of Resume & materials, and switch to this interview's set first.

Talks: script prompter

Your full text, shown as written with no AI involved. See Using the script prompter below.

Keep a copy: click Export materials at the top of Resume & materials and choose a folder. Every set is saved as plain text — Q&A, background notes and scripts. Nothing is uploaded, and export pauses while an interview is running.

Using the script prompter
  1. Import or paste your text under Resume & materials → Script prompter and save.
  2. In the interview, press Ctrl+Shift+7 (Mac: Command+Shift+7) to show it; press again to hide it.
  3. Ctrl+Shift+8 / 9 (Mac: Command+Shift+8 / 9) turn pages and A- / A+ change the text size.
  4. Alt+P (Mac: Option+P) pauses or resumes auto-reading; Ctrl+Alt+P (Mac: Control+Option+P) switches its speed between slow, standard and fast.
  5. With several scripts, press Ctrl+Alt+N (Mac: Control+Option+N) for the next one; after the last one it goes back to the first.
  6. The page, auto-read, speed and next-script keys only work while the prompter is open, so they don't take keys from other apps the rest of the time. If the prompter says another app is using these shortcuts, change them under Settings → Shortcuts.

Before you write
  • This is about how to answer, not what to answer. Experience, numbers and reasons for leaving belong in your materials; don't paste your resume here.
  • "Answer length" only applies to Full answer when none of your prepared Q&As match.
  • Set the code language with the selector at the top of the page (or next to F4 on the main screen), not in the prompt.
  • A custom prompt no longer gets app improvements. If you want your preferences and future improvements, use Adjust recommended settings.
  • After changing it, run Guide → Test how answers come out on a real question, not on the day of the interview.

Step by step, by scenario

Pick today's scenario, follow the steps, then check Done right.

Video interview (mode: Video interview)

Zoom, Teams, Meet or any call running on this computer.

  1. Choose Video interview and click Start interview. Headphones recommended.
  2. The overlay opens by itself. Place it just below your webcam; Ctrl+Shift+Space hides it and brings it back.
  3. When the interviewer finishes, press F1 and start with the answer's first sentence.
  4. Click End interview when you're done. The record saves automatically.

Done right: the transcript moves on the left and an answer appears on the right within seconds of F1. No transcript? See No interviewer audio.

In the overlay: transcript on the left, answer on the right.

Phone or speaker call (mode: Speaker mode)

The call runs on your phone or another device. If the meeting is open on your phone, use this mode. Your computer only listens and shows answers.

  1. Put the phone on speaker next to your computer, at medium volume.
  2. Choose Speaker mode, run the mic check in the control area to confirm the computer can hear it, then click Start interview.
  3. Press F1 after each question. For answers without a key press, first record about 20 seconds under Settings → My voice.
  4. Want answers on the phone? In the setup card, at Meeting on your phone?, click Scan to connect phone. Then click Turn on auto answers so answers appear when the interviewer finishes, without touching the phone.
  5. If CalmRound says the computer hasn't heard the interview clearly, turn the phone volume up and move it closer.

Done right: the transcript moves as soon as the interviewer speaks, and F1 answers the question they just asked. Answers stay on the main window; press Ctrl+Shift+Space if you want the overlay.

CalmRound speaker mode setup (demo data): microphone test and Start interview
Test the microphone first, then start.

Online test (mode: Online test)

Multiple-choice, true/false, fill-in, short-answer and coding questions in a browser or test app.

  1. Choose Online test and click Start test. The main window tucks away and the overlay opens. To listen with headphones, first turn on Read test answers aloud automatically and click Preview.
  2. When a question appears, press F5 for regular questions or F4 for coding.
  3. Screenshot answers take longer than F1, and hard questions take a while; don't press it again while you wait. One question per screenshot is fastest; the more screenshots you send together, the longer it takes.
  4. Question spans several screens? Press Alt+S (Mac: Option+S) on each, then F5 or F4 to send them together.
  5. Chat windows or sidebars in the way? Use Set capture area in the answer panel to frame the question.
  6. Recent news or new rules: before you start, turn on Web search (online tests only) in Settings → AI answer settings.

Before the real test, try CalmRound on the platform's practice test: check whether a full-screen F5 capture gets correct answers or you need to frame the question with Set capture area first; some platforms block shortcuts or screenshots, so find out early, not mid-test.

Done right: after F5, the overlay shows the question number, answer and explanation.

Live coding

You're asked to write code during the interview, with the problem on screen or only read aloud.

  1. First choose Video interview or Speaker mode, then click Start interview.
  2. Problem on screen: press F4. Problem only read aloud: press Ctrl+F4 (Mac: Option+C). Hard problems take a while; don't press again while you wait.
  3. One rule: to talk, press F1; for code, press F4.
  4. Asked "why did you write it this way" or "what's the complexity": press F1. Text starts in about a second.
  5. Asked to add a condition, change the code, or write a call example: press F4. It revises the last version. The example comes in its own block; don't submit it.
  6. You changed the code on screen yourself, or the interviewer points at a line: press F4. F1 can't see your screen.

Done right: F1 talks about the last version the app gave you. Don't press F8 until the problem is done; it clears this problem.

F4 gives the approach, code and complexity.

Interviews in another language

The interview isn't in English, or it switches between two languages.

  1. Before you start, pick the interview's language under Settings → General → Answer and recognition language. There are nine: English, Chinese, Japanese, German, Spanish, French, Korean, Italian and Russian.
  2. Questions in two languages? Turn on the switch below the language list. With English it reads Answer Chinese questions in Chinese; with any other language, Answer English questions in English. The list itself has no mixed option.
  3. To read a translation with each answer, turn on Show translations alongside foreign-language answers under Settings → General. It's off by default unless the app is set to Chinese, and the translation is in your display language.
  4. The programming language for F4 and F5 code is set separately in Settings → AI answer settings.

Done right: the transcript and answers are in the interview's language.

Mock interview

Practice before the real thing: an AI interviewer asks questions and you answer out loud.

  1. Choose Mock interview and click Start mock interview. The overlay opens, the same as in a real interview.
  2. Answer as you would for real. Stuck? Press F1.
  3. To check the main window, click Main window in the overlay; the practice keeps going.
  4. When you're done, click End & report in the overlay. Read the report and History, and add the questions you struggled with to your materials.

Done right: after one round you get a report and know which questions need better materials.

Keep answers off a second camera

Pick one of two setups, then film a test run to check.

Placement comes first. Point the lens at you so your face, hands and desk are in frame. Keep the answer screen out of the replay — outside the frame, behind the monitor or your body, or too far to read. The camera stays where the interviewer asked; move the screen, not the camera. 1. Under Settings → General → Overlay, set Visual mode to Fusion mode.
  2. Use the eye button or Ctrl+Shift+, to make the text as faint as you can still read.
  3. Keep the window narrow and just below your webcam.

  2. When the computer shows Phone connected, ask a test question to confirm it syncs.
  3. Mute the phone and fix it in place. On the computer, press Ctrl+~ (Mac: Control+~) to hide the overlay.

Only have a phone? The phone cannot hear the call while the meeting app is open, so the listening and answering still happen on a computer. 2. Click Start test. The main window tucks away and only the test page stays on screen.
  3. Press F5 on each question to hear the question number and answer; code and explanations stay in the overlay.

Always film a test run. Film 10 seconds with another phone from the interviewer's angle: your face and hands clear, the answer text not.

Every step with screenshots: Second camera setup guide.

Using proctoring or monitoring software? CalmRound isn't intended for that setting — our Terms prohibit use in proctored exams and wherever outside help is disallowed.

Overlay and privacy

The overlay opens by itself when an interview starts, and Ctrl+Shift+Space hides it or brings it back. For a normal video call, change nothing.

CalmRound overlay close-up (demo data): live transcript on the left, suggested answer on the right, size and opacity icons along the top
The icons along the top change text size and opacity, switch between focus mode and Fusion Mode, and open the guide. Text color and layout are in Settings → General → Overlay.

Kept out of shares (on by default)

The main window, overlay and answers are designed to stay out of screen shares, recordings and screenshots on Windows and macOS.

Running low on credits?

The overlay reminds you when about six minutes of interview time are left, and again at one minute. Click Top up in the overlay, pay, and it brings you back to the interview.

Hard to read? Change the text color

Change it under Settings → General → Overlay; the script prompter changes with it. Focus mode offers White, Cream and Light gray. Fusion mode offers White text and Dark text.

  1. Click Preview overlay first, so you see each change as you make it.
  2. In fusion mode, pick Dark text for white pages and White text for dark pages.
  3. Still too faint? Raise the opacity on the same page, or increase Overlay text size.

Done right: on the page you'll interview on, you can read the answer at a glance.

Run a stealth self-check before the interview

Stealth needs no setup; the self-check confirms it really works on this computer. Only the desktop app has stealth.

  1. Stop any screen share, then open Settings → Stealth self-check, or click Stealth self-check under Settings → General → Stealth.
  2. Click Start full self-check and follow the prompts through the key stealth, tab-switch and shared-screen checks.
  3. Look at the shared-screen image it generates: if there's no CalmRound window and no unusual black block, click Looks normal.

Done right: all three checks pass. Before the real interview, share a blank desktop once in the call to confirm.

  • Windows 10 older than version 2004 can only show a black block in shares: update Windows first.
  • Turned on demo mode? Turn it off and restart CalmRound before the self-check.

Only when you need them

Deep stealth: hide the icon or disguise CalmRound

Under Settings → General → Deep stealth, pick one of three levels: Off, Hide the taskbar icon (on a Mac, Hide the Dock icon) or Deep disguise (process identity). With the icon hidden, get the main window back like this:

  1. Press Ctrl+~ (Mac: Control+~) to bring the main window back, and again to hide it. While the overlay is open, this key hides the overlay first.
  2. Or use the printer icon in the system tray. On Windows it's at the bottom right (click ^ to show hidden icons): click it, or right-click it for the menu. On a Mac it's in the menu bar: click it and choose Show Main Window. While the overlay is open, clicking it shows the menu first: choose Close Overlay and Show Main Window.
  3. To stop hiding, set the level back to Off.

Deep disguise

On Windows and Mac (not in the stealth build), Deep disguise (process identity) restarts CalmRound once under the name “Print Workflow Service” with a printer icon, so Task Manager, the desktop and the Start menu no longer show CalmRound; on Windows its shortcut is named “Print Workflow Host”. The taskbar icon is hidden too. You can't switch it during an interview; choosing Off restarts once more and brings the CalmRound name back.

Secure share screen: a clean screen to share (Mac)

Mac only, off by default. A few meeting, recording and streaming apps ignore window protection when they share a whole screen, so CalmRound ends up in the stream. With it on, an extra screen appears when an interview starts: your main display live, just without CalmRound. It's named “Extended Display”, or “HDMI Display” in the stealth build or with deep disguise on.

  1. Before the interview, open Settings → General → Secure share screen and turn on Turn on automatically during interviews. One-time setup.
  2. Next to the toggle, click Preview this screen (90 s), then open your meeting app and click Share screen: the screen should be in the list. The preview closes itself after 90 seconds.
  3. When you share, pick that screen in the list, not your main screen. It disappears when the interview ends.

Done right: the other side sees your desktop with no CalmRound and no black block, while CalmRound stays visible and usable on your screen.

It stays off in demo mode. On a multi-display setup it mirrors only your main display; if the interview is on another display, share a single window instead.

Clicking the overlay keeps focus on your call (Windows)

Clicking or dragging the overlay doesn't pull focus from your call, test page or IDE. It turns on by itself; its status is under Settings → General → Overlay protection. macOS doesn't support this.

Overlay gone or can't be clicked? See Overlay can't be clicked or has disappeared.

After the interview

Spend 5 minutes reviewing so the next one goes better.

  1. Open History at the top. The review comes first: an overall score, the most likely point losses and what to do before the next interview.
  2. Then go through each question: what the interviewer said, what you said and the reference answer. Each question gets a short review and Say it like this next time.
  3. Click Load recording to play by line, then ▶ next to a line to hear it from there. The left channel is the interviewer, the right channel is you.
  4. For a question that went badly, click Add this question to the knowledge base and edit it into the answer you want.
  5. Fill in Interview details (company, role, round, result and notes) so search can find it later.
  6. Click Weak questions to see the questions you keep missing across interviews, then Practice these to start a mock interview with them.
  7. In test records, click Save to question bank to be reminded when the same question comes up again.
  8. Deleted an interview by mistake? Restore it within 7 days from Recently deleted at the bottom of the list.

Records save on this computer automatically. To export them to another folder, use Settings → General → Interview records.

Troubleshooting

The most common problems come first. Search a symptom or key, such as "audio", "F1" or "overlay".

No interviewer audio or no transcript

Seeing Only your voice came through, not the interviewer's? That's normal when you're testing on your own: press F2 to answer the question you just said. In a real interview, the call audio isn't reaching this computer; check these three steps.

  1. Pick the mode by where the call runs: on this computer, Video interview; on your phone or another device, Speaker mode, with the phone on speaker next to the computer.
  2. Video interview picks up what your computer plays through its default output (see Interviewer audio in the control area). Make the speakers or headphones you hear the call on the default output in Sound settings, and set the meeting app's speaker to the same device.
  3. Mac: under System Settings → Privacy & Security, allow Microphone and Screen Recording (called Screen & System Audio Recording from macOS 14), then press Cmd+Q and open CalmRound again. Switch already on but still nothing? In Settings → Stealth self-check, click Grant screen recording; if that doesn't help, click Copy fix command, run it in Terminal, then quit and reopen.

Still no audio: use Speaker mode for this interview.

F1 does nothing
  • Nothing happens at all

First press F1 once without Fn. If nothing happens, try Fn+F1. Before you start an interview, the app asks you to press F1 once and tests this for you. If you need Fn, click Switch to keys without Fn (then press the new key for answers), or lock Fn with Fn+Esc (the lock key on most computers). On a Mac, click Turn off Fn mode. Changed keyboards or the Fn lock? In Settings → Shortcuts, open Shortcuts not responding, or want the defaults back? and click Test again, then press F1 when asked.

  • The app says Nothing to answer has been captured yet

The question wasn't heard. Press again once the interviewer finishes, or repeat the question yourself and press F2. No transcript at all? See No interviewer audio.

  • The interview is paused

Click Resume interview first, then press F1.

The answer is for the wrong question, or I want another

Misheard word: F3. Not picked up: F2. Different wording: Ctrl+F1. Details in When an answer misses.

Screenshot answers (F4, F5) are slow

Screenshot answers take longer than F1, and hard questions take a while; don't press it again while you wait. One question per screenshot is fastest; every extra screenshot sent together with Alt+S adds time. For easy questions, choose Fast under AI thinking depth.

  1. Check your network. If you use a VPN or proxy, turn it off or switch it, then try again.
  2. Press the key again.
  3. Still slow or failing often: turn on Dual-engine boost below Start interview for your next interview.
  4. Still failing: go to Settings → About & updates and click Send diagnostics to support.
A file won't import

Only PDF, DOCX, TXT and MD import, and not while an interview is running. For .doc files, slides, images, scans and large files, see step 1 of Prepare your materials. The error message says what to do with that file.

Overlay can't be clicked or has disappeared

Press Ctrl+~ in case it's hidden, Ctrl+Shift+G to make it clickable, and restore the recommended size under Settings → General → Overlay. In online tests the overlay closes when your phone connects and returns when it disconnects.

Overlay text is hard to read

Change the text color under Settings → General → Overlay. In fusion mode, pick Dark text on white pages. Still faint? Raise the opacity or the text size. See Hard to read? Change the text color.

The overlay is just a grey box

Update to the latest version: Settings → About & updates → Check for updates. If it still happens, click Send diagnostics to support on the same page.

The other side can see CalmRound or a black block when I share
  • Run the stealth self-check and follow what it says.
  • Windows 10 older than version 2004 can only show a black block: update Windows.
  • Turned on demo mode? Turn it off and restart CalmRound.
  • Mac, sharing a whole screen: turn on the secure share screen and share “Extended Display” (or “HDMI Display”).
No sign-in code, or I can't sign in
  • The email can take a few minutes. Check your spam folder.
  • Check your network. If you use a VPN or proxy, turn it off and try again.
  • Don't request codes again and again: a new code needs a one-minute wait, and after many requests you may have to wait 10 minutes.
An update won't install

Quit CalmRound completely and open it again. If it still fails, download the latest installer from the download page and run it.

The meeting app is probably using the wrong camera: see Pick the camera in your meeting app. For other camera problems, see the eye contact guide.

Mac: install in one click

Open the DMG and double-click Install CalmRound. It quits a running copy first, moves the old version to the Trash, installs into Applications and opens the new version. If installation fails, the old version stays. Finish any interview before you start.

CalmRound isn't in the taskbar, or the main window is gone

You probably turned on Hide the taskbar icon. Press Ctrl+~, or click the printer icon in the system tray (on a Mac, click it and choose Show Main Window). See Getting the window back.

My prepared answer got reworded

The default, Flexible (recommended), reworks prepared answers to fit the question. To keep your wording, choose Prepared answer first under Settings → AI answer settings. Only Prepared answers you wrote, or AI-organized ones you edited, count.

Auto answer fires too early or not at all

Too early: raise the wait to 2–3 seconds. Not at all: check that AI answer settings is on Auto answer; Speaker mode needs My voice recorded first; tests don't use auto answer.

F3 doesn't open

F3 works once a video, speaker or mock interview has started, not during a practice run or an online test.

Clicking the overlay pulls focus from my call

Windows: check the Click-without-focus status under Settings → General → Overlay protection. If it shows a failure, quit CalmRound completely and reopen it. macOS doesn't support this.

Phone doesn't sync

Choose Local network backup, put both devices on the same Wi-Fi and scan again.

No sound in my headphones during a test

Check that your system output is the headphones, then click Preview in the test controls; meanwhile read the answers in the overlay.

Check that your text is saved under Resume & materials → Script prompter, then press the script key shown under Settings → Shortcuts.

Japanese isn't recognized correctly

Before you start, choose Japanese under Settings → General → Answer and recognition language. If English questions come up too, turn on Answer English questions in English below it.

Can I use it in a proctored test?

No. CalmRound isn't intended for proctored exams — our Terms prohibit use in proctored exams and wherever outside help is disallowed.
